Skiing and Snow-Boarding

Dachstein West

Explore the picturesque and varied dachsteinwest-logoDachstein West skiing area, with over 140km of pistes.  Start from Gosau or Russbach (approx 20 and 25 minutes drive away respectively) and you find ski hire, ski lessons, ski shops and large car parking areas.  A variety of ski runs cater for all abilities and a network of modern lifts allows easy access to the region.  A variety of traditional mountain huts offer delicious regional specialities.

Coupled with delightful views, relatively quiet pistes and snow-sure conditions – Dachstein West offers great skiing for all levels of skiers – from beginners to those wishing for more of a challenge!  Travel from Obertraun by car, taxi or free ski bus.     More info about Dachstein West here

The Krippenstein

krippenstein-lgoThe Krippenstein may not be the biggest skiing area in terms of size – but it provides a wonderfully scenic and interesting skiing experience to its visitors.  The mountain is located behind Landhaus Lilly and is accessed via cable car (with the lower cable car station located just a few minutes drive away).  Enjoy the breath-taking scenery as you make your way down the 11km pisted ski run, from the top of the Krippenstein, back to the village.

You can find food, refreshments and a spectacular panorama at ‘The Lodge’ mountain restaurant, or part way along the 11km piste, at the Krippenbrunn, with 10 huts with its own ‘Gasthaus’.  The views from the top of the Krippenstein are fabulous and many people take the cable car up to the summit in the winter months to enjoy the amazing landscape – and perhaps visit the Five Fingers viewing platform using snow shoes.

Freeride and Powder

There are many off-piste opportunities to explore with a local guide on the 30+km of freeride and powder routes on the Krippenstein, which attract skiers from all over the world.  Guides can be organised to take small groups on an introductory or day experience.  More info about the Krippenstein here

Cross-Country skiing

cross-country-obertraunThere are many opportunities for cross country skiing – both in and around Obertraun itself  and in the nearby areas of Gosau, Bad Aussee and Bad Goisern.  Join one popular route within walking distance of Landhaus Lilly which leads you to the nearby Koppenwinkl Nature Reserve.  Cross Country skis can be hired locally.  More info about Cross-Country skiing around Obertraun here
